Custom Helmets for Infant Flat Head Syndrome in Southwestern Ontario | Guelph Orthotics

Helmeting for Plagiocephaly and Brachycelphaly

New parents already have so much to think about — worrying about their baby’s head shape shouldn’t be added to the list. If your little one has a flat spot or other head shape asymmetry, a cranial remolding helmet may be recommended.

At Guelph Orthotics, we provide compassionate care every step of the way, helping families feel supported and confident throughout the process. Our goal is not only to improve head shape, but also to ensure your baby’s comfort and well-being.

What Is Baby Helmet Therapy?

Baby helmet therapy, or cranial remolding, involves the use of a custom-designed helmet to gently guide the growth of a baby’s skull into a more symmetrical and proportionate shape. This therapy is typically recommended for infants between 4 to 6 months of age, when the skull is most responsive to reshaping.

Our Talee helmets are crafted using advanced 3D printing technology, ensuring a lightweight, breathable, and comfortable fit for your baby.

The Process: What to Expect?

Initial Assessment

The journey begins with a comprehensive evaluation of your baby’s head shape, at no charge. Using 3D scanning technology, we capture precise measurements to assess the severity of the flat head and determine the most appropriate next steps. Most babies we see do not need a helmet, and families leave feeling reassured that they are taking all the right steps for their child’s care, whether that’s a referral to physiotherapy, re-scanning to track changes, or other recommended measures.

Custom Helmet Design and Fitting

Based on the initial scan, if required, a custom helmet is designed to fit your baby’s unique head shape. The fitting appointment is scheduled approximately two weeks after the assessment. During this visit, we ensure the helmet fits properly and make any necessary adjustments.

Follow-Up Appointments

Regular check-ups are scheduled to monitor progress and make adjustments as needed. The first two follow-ups occur two weeks apart, with subsequent appointments scheduled four weeks apart. These visits are crucial for objectively tracking the reshaping process and ensuring optimal results.
